It calls for a national task force on stop-and-search to be created to build public confidence in the tactic and reduce disproportionality as well as introduce a ‘threat level’ system to flag the need for area-wide stops.
Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime and Joint Chair of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) Race Disparity Working Group, said:
“This report highlights some shocking issues around trust and disproportionately nationally, particularly from the black community.
“Sadly, a lot of this doesn’t come as a surprise and the recommendations made have my support.
“Locally, I am working with the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, the police and our communities to improve the situation. West Yorkshire Police has already made positive strides in this area, through training and the use of body worn camera, but more must be done, as outlined.
“One thing that obviously needs to change is the level of support from the Government, and I hope they take note of this report and back the recommendations with action.”
