The Mayor of West Yorkshire

So, what does the Mayor do? With wide-ranging powers that affect all of West Yorkshire, the Mayor has a strong voice. This extends to responsibilities for transport, economic development, skills training, housing and more.

Taking on the functions of the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Mayor also appointed Alison Lowe OBE as Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime for both first and second terms.

How did it all begin? It all started with a landmark devolution deal for West Yorkshire, announced in March 2020. The groundbreaking £1.8 billion announcement was agreed by West Yorkshire’s five council leaders and the government. The deal included the new creation of a Mayor for the region. The current Mayor’s term lasts from 2024 to 2028.

Making West Yorkshire a better place to live. An ambitious goal, but one that the Mayor of West Yorkshire is determined to achieve. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that lots of hard work is very much in progress.

Using her devolved powers alongside the leaders of our five local authority partners, Tracy Brabin is ensuring that all our communities are represented fairly.

As the voice of the people of West Yorkshire, the Mayor is making sure our region is heard at a national level, influencing government decisions that relate to our area.

The Mayor's Inclusivity Champion

Appointed by the Mayor on 23 March 2023, Fatima Khan-Shah serves as our Inclusivity Champion. She is a spokesperson and a driver of change in our region.

The Inclusivity Champion works with regional leaders and local communities. Khan-Shah offers expert advice on inclusion and helps tackle regional issues in social, economic, and health areas.

The Mayor’s Business Advisor

Mandy joined the board of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in 2019 and now chairs the West Yorkshire Business Board. She was appointed as Business Advisor to the Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin in 2023.

The Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime

When Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, was re-elected on 4 May 2024, she selected Alison Lowe (OBE) as her Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime (DMPC).

The DMPC works alongside the Mayor to oversee policing in West Yorkshire. Their goal is to ensure that policing meets public needs and standards.
